About the Item

19th century Syria - Ottoman Empire A precious and very old large reversible silk ikat towel or wall hanging, originating from Aleppo or Damascus, dating from the 19th century. Very fine weave with strong polychromy, made on a hand loom. Geometric patterns using the ancestral technique of ikat or tarbit in Arabic, which consists of dyeing the warp threads before weaving. These Syrian ikats were exported throughout the Arab world but also to Indonesia, where they were then copied by local weavers. Long fringes at the top and bottom of the loom, textile has retained its original finish. The colors are preserved, but unfortunately this precious and fragile piece has numerous moth holes. It can be handled as is, but silk lining for reinforcement may eventually be considered. However, the piece is complete, uncut, and unaltered. Average condition. Very rare piece and priced accordingly. Not wearable. Dimensions: 200 cm x 116 cm
