About the Item

Circa 1780-1800 India, for export to Europe A very rare Indian Kashmir shawl with Kani weave from the East India Company, dating from the last quarter of the 18th century. Very fine tapestry stitching known as kani weave with a large reserve center in twill weave made from Tibetan goat down, extremely soft. It is woven in a single piece with double side borders, which is a technological feat on the part of 18th-century Indian craftsmen. Each end consists of eight boteh with a Mille Fleurs decoration, four boteh corners and matching not sewn fringes, typical of 18th-century Indian best production. These stole shawls were worn by the English and then French elite from the Directoire French period onwards, whose most famous muse was Joséphine de Beauharnais (see last photo from the Musée Masséna in Nice). The Indian shawl was in keeping with the post-revolutionary ‘décorseté’ fashion, which consisted of draping oneself in the antique style, like a Greek statue! Three or four rare tiny moth holes, one tiny repair (photo file available on request). No other defects. Exceptional condition considering its age and presumed fragility. Dimensions: 265 cm long by 130 cm. Similar reference at the Musée de la Compagnie des Indes in Port Louis, France.
