About the Item
Circa 1855-1860
France Paris
A French long Cashmere Paisley shawl, possibly from The Hébert House, with poly-lobed reserve and unidentified signature dating from the early Second French Empire. Very fine eight-colour cut-throw weaving on a Jacquard loom. Rich vegetal decoration with poly-lobed architecture, certainly of Indian influence, but revealing here the great creativity of the French and Parisian school of design. On each slope, three large arcatures in elongated cartouches and long tapering palms charged with stylised temples. A central reserve with a spectacular design on a black background, a signature woven in the oriental style and an ovoid variation of curves illuminated with red and pink circles. Harlequin and fringed borders on both ends. This is a prestigious Parisian manufacture such as Bourgeois Frères, J. Chanel, Bietry or simply Hébert's son called Emile. No defects to be noted, original colours preserved and remarkable fineness. Very good condition.
Dimensions: 160 cm x 343 cm and 6 cm of fringe.
Sources: Publications by Monique Lévi-Strauss
Emile Frédéric Hébert was the first Parisian Shawl manufactor to sign his work at the Conseil des Prud'hommes de Paris in 1852 with a calligraphic signature indicating H Cachemire Pur, thus initiating literary and artistic property through a deposit, the forerunner of Copyright. Of the handful of manufacturers and designers who took part in the Universal Exhibitions in Paris and London in the 19th century, only a few followed the example of the oriental signature, such as Maison Hébert. This shawl is graphically similar to a work entitled Le Cercle, registered with the Conseil des Prud'Hommes in 1855 by Emile Hébert, son and successor of Frédéric Hébert.

19th Century Hand-Woven Kashmiri Paisley "Piano" Shawl
Located in Barrington, IL
A refined 19th-century hand-woven Paisley shawl from Northwest India, showcasing a sophisticated color palette of brick red, ivory, and black. Crafted in the Kashmir region, this historic textile represents the pinnacle of Indian weaving traditions and is often referred to as a "Piano Shawl" for its wide rectangular shape and decorative appeal when draped over furniture.
The shawl features classic boteh (paisley) motifs that became emblematic of Kashmiri craftsmanship. These designs gained international popularity during the 1800s, particularly after Queen Victoria introduced them into royal fashion. This style inspired a wave of European imitations, notably in Paisley, Scotland—yet original Indian examples like this remain the most coveted by collectors.
Versatile in use, this antique textile can serve as a luxurious wall hanging, a dramatic table or piano covering, or an elegant bed display. It’s a timeless heirloom piece, ideal for traditional, eclectic, or globally inspired interiors.
