This incredible 1970s peasant style dress with layered skirt and tassel detail is by British designer Bill Gibb, who's work is described as the nearest a British designer ever got to haute couture. This exceptional piece is a wonderful example of the voluminous, romantic fairytale inspired gowns that became his signature look and there are some beautifully ornate trims and embellishments. The dress is comprised of contrasting fabrics (another signature of the designer) combining a soft ivory antique style lace with a poly-blend organza style fabric that hosts an exquisite seashell novelty print in gold and ochre tones. The shell print fabric features on the puff shoulder, sleeves, pleated peplum and knee length over-skirt. The lace makes up the full circle floor length under-skirt and is cut into 2 x layered tiers with scalloped hemlines over an ivory petticoat. It is also incorporated into the panelling on the smocked, Appalachian style bodice. The central detail here is a rectangular insert in fawn suede embroidered with a needlepoint flower and adorned with lengthy suede beaded tassels that cascade down the centre front of the dress. Matching tassel trim is used to embellish the ruffled cuffs on each sleeve, also decorated with embroidered flowers. Contrasting decorative ribbon trim defines the cuffs, waistband, peplum and overskirt hem. It also runs the length of the bodice from the shoulders to the waistband in parallel bands creating a deep rectangular plunge neckline. The dress is fully lined and there is a central zip fastening at the reverse. This extraordinary piece is in excellent vintage condition and is nothing short of spectacular. Museum worthy and a defining piece for the discernible collector. The bohemian, romantic aesthetic would also make this a beautiful alternative bridal gown. Would best suit a US size 0-2, UK size 4-6 due to the petite bust and waist measurements. NOTES ON DESIGNER: Bill Gibb was certainly a true artist who having taken inspiration from Yardley's "London Look" early in his career, went on to found his own label of extraordinary creations influenced by the hippie movement, history, fantasy and nature. He loved to experiment with patterned knitwear, colourful draped fabrics, and opulent evening wear, mixing exotic trims and unusual textures. Impeccably close in aesthetic to the eminence of Parisian Haute Couture, he is on of Britain's best loved and celebrated designers.
