Founders and History
Carly Cushnie and Michelle Ochs met while studying at the Parsons School of Design in New York. They launched their label immediately after graduation in 2008.
Their design aesthetic combined strong sensuality with minimalist elegance, resulting in pieces that were both slinky and structured. The duo received critical acclaim early on, winning the Ecco Domani Award in 2009 and being finalists for the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund in 2011.
The brand gained significant publicity when First Lady Michelle Obama wore one of their dresses in 2011, and their designs became a staple among celebrities like Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, and Blake Lively.
In 2018, after a decade of partnership, Michelle Ochs left the company. Carly Cushnie continued as the sole creative director and CEO, and the brand name was shortened to Cushnie.
The Cushnie brand closed its doors in October 2020, with Carly Cushnie citing the financial strains of the COVID-19 pandemic as the primary reason.
