About the Item

With a biomorphic print and curvilinear layered design created by Spain-based renowned multimedia artist Sybilla, this rare billowy bias-cut semi-transparent silk crepe sleeveless V-neck midi dress for Spring 1994 is composed of the elegant lines and fluid draping, along with the colorful palette including Spanish-olive green, that have distinguished her for over four decades as the most respected Spanish fashion designer since Cristobal Balenciaga. After the early 1980s when her collections emerged internationally in Paris, Milan and New York along with Fashion Week peers like Jean Paul Gaultier, recognition mounted when she was bestowed in 1987 with both the French Prix Fil d'Or and the Spanish Premio Balenciaga award for Best Young Designer of the Year. Shortly following the opening of her first boutique in Madrid the same year, museums worldwide began to exhibit and collect her clothing and accessories, notably including TheMet and FIT in New York, Musee de la Mode de la Ville de Paris, and Museo de la Moda in her home country. Early on, she designed multiple lines including couture, ready-to-wear, knitwear, bags and shoes, and opened additional boutiques in Paris and Toyko. By the 1990s, her biggest market became Japan, where she launched 20 in-store shops to cater to her younger customers with the playful line "Jocomomola de Sybilla" (translating as: it's so cool), which was initially made in the country where our dress originated. Nevertheless, partly owing to Japanese fine craftsmanship, there are a considerable amount of Sybilla's couture elements in this surprisingly ready-to-wear dress! Notably, this dress has painstakingly topstitched darts that fan to shape the upper bodice and a self-facing loose waistband, as well as semi-transparent self-facing straps and a draping long neckline tie. The made-in-Japan size is noted as 42, while the measurements are for a French-size 42. Since luxury brands like Louis Vuitton and icons of interior design such as Alessi have collaborated with Sybilla, admiration of her painterly or embroidered fabrics and clothing cuts and contours recalling Flamenco dancers recently brought her back to her U.S. birthplace. She collaborated with New York-based Caroline Herrera Creative Director Wes Gordon for his Spring 2026 collection, which features motifs, shapes and cut-work that were meant to be a "love letter to Madrid". Otherwise, 1stDibs viewers may explore her contemporary designs for hand-loomed rugs for Spanish-producer Nanimarquina. The designer was named Maria Sybilla Sorondo at birth in New York. She moved to Madrid at age seven with her foreign-born parents, then to Paris in 1980 where she apprenticed at Yves Saint Laurent before returning to her adopted county. Closing in 2023, the largest retrospective of her fashion work, "Sybilla: The Invisible Thread", was exhibited in Madrid at the Canal de Isabel II.

Verlaine Vintage presents a Jean Colonna asymmetric floral dress from the spring-summer 1998 collection. A piece that epitomizes Jean Colonna's minimalist sensuality, this dress has an interesting asymmetric design. The left side is constructed with a regular long sleeve, while the right side is sleeveless and the neckline functions as a shoulder strap. The designer explored this concept in several of their mid-'90s collections. The piece is crafted from an unusual technical jersey (71% viscose, 21% nylon) with a floral print that would look right at home in a vintage 70s interior...
