About the Item

This spectacular duchess dress in turquoise satin has magnificent construction and emulates the extravagance and glamour of the 1950s. The sleeveless bodice has a subtle square neckline at the front, and graduates in a V at the reverse. The wide 4.5 inch waistband starts directly beneath the bust and is gently rushed, incorporating a band of paler seafoam coloured satin to define the silhouette. The waistband is corseted beneath the fabric and the construction continues over the hips to create a crinoline effect, elevating the skirt and in turn dramatically accentuating the waistline. The full skirt falls in soft pleats to the lower calf and is reinforced with a layer of stiff starched fabric and a double layer of thick calico that makes up the petticoat and protective lining beneath the corset. In superb vintage condition, would best suit a US size 4, UK size 8 being mindful that the corseted waist doesn't permit much give. Unlabelled but of excellent quality.

This original 1950s turquoise and net prom dress is a real show-stopping, fairy tale piece. It reminds us of the Disney Princess dress worn by Cinderella at the ball. There are three layers to the skirt; an acetate underskirt, over-laid with a plain net skirt and finally the top layer. This has 11 ruffle trims added in rows which give the dress a very full and sweeping profile. The boned bodice is also in the same coloured ruched fabric, imitating taffeta silk with net trim to the sweetheart neckline. This 1960s Tony Armstrong evening dress is cut in a classic and flattering column silhouette with a high rounded neckline and short, slightly capped sleeves. The front is very lightly embroidered with fine blue thread in a criss-cross pattern. This continues round to the back of the dress, where a concealed original metal zipper ensures a smooth and seamless fit. A pair of right and left darts to the front and back emphasises the waist. The fabric is a very fine quality peacock blue raw silk with a satin sheen to it whilst it is fully lined in a lilac coloured acetate. A best fit for around a UK 8-10 or US 4-6. Superb vintage condition and looks barely worn, we noted only a small area of discoloration to the lining near both the sleeve underarms but this is totally unseen when worn.
