Kenzo, fall 1976
A rare runway piece from Kenzo’s 1976 Kenzo Jap collection, this black silk gown captures the designer’s early exploration of fluid shape and cultural fusion. Cut in a loose, draped silhouette, the dress cascades in soft folds that gather along the sides and fall into an elongated, sculptural hemline. Ties at the shoulders allow the volume to be adjusted, emphasizing the organic movement of the fabric. Made from silk, the dress reflects Kenzo Takada’s thoughtful approach to design, balancing structure with a sense of ease and fluidity.
"In so naming his line, the designer threw down a gauntlet. “By insisting upon ‘Jap’ for his early collections,” curator Richard Martin has written, Takada “encourag[ed] a racist pejorative to be converted into a positive identity.” Takada is remembered for the way he fused cross-cultural inspirations into something new, and identifiably Kenzo."
Labeled a French size '36' however this fits many sizes due to the loose cut.
Approximate length : 58-63"+. Slips on over the head. Ties secure at shoulders.
100% silk of a light-weight which drapes beautifully.
Made in France.
