About the Item

Yannis Tseklenis (born 1937) is recognised today as a leading Greek fashion designer who was active between 1965 and 1991. His designs were sold worldwide and were inspired by his native Greece. Most notably, Tseklenis focused on textile patterns which although highly modern in appearance referenced Byzantine manuscripts, ancient Greek vases, wood carvings and paintings as well as artwork from a multitude of cultures. Before designing fashion, in 1963 Tseklenis exhibited his artwork at the Athenian gallery Architektoniki and took over his father’s textile business in 1965. For his first collection he collaborated with fellow Greek fashion designer Dimis Kritsas, which was then purchased by Elizabeth Arden’s ‘Couture of New York’ label. In the 1970s, Tseklenis opened boutiques and showrooms worldwide. This dress was created exclusively for Frank Usher couture house in the 1970s and features an iconic print by Tseklenis. Constructed in silk and lined in silk-like material , the cream, beige, royal blue, black, brown and turquoise blue abstract printed dress includes shapes of several hands and Tseklenis’ own signature, asserting the authorship and artistry of his design. The maxi-length dress has a scoop neck, with eighteen fabric covered loop hole buttons down the front, cuffed long sleeves and knee-high side slits. A matching structured fabric belt with a gold metal square buckle can optionally fasten the dress at the natural waist, further enhancing the streamlined silhouette.
