Fab 1960 s Geoffrey Beene Black Velvet Ivory Satin Evening Dress

About the Item

Geoffrey Beene's take on effortless American style is most evident in his evening wear designs. This 1960's rendition of a ball gown is both elegant and dramatic without pretense ... and oh so easy to wear! The dress snaps and hooks at the crossover modified empire waist black velvet bodice with a billowy ivory satin skirt featuring side pockets hidden in the folds. Mr. Beene puts his own spin on a portrait collar with coordinating fabric (we like it turned up ... or wear it flat) and provides additional visual interest with exaggerated scalloped cuffs. Everything is cinched into place by a black velvet belt. The end result is a combination of pop modern graphics and old school glamour. The dress is lined and originally retailed at Saks Fifth Avenue. At first glance, the dress appears to be in excellent condition though close scrutiny reveals a couple of discolorations to the ivory fabric. There is one black smudge spot at the front 1" above the hemline as shown in photograph 8. There are a pair of rusty color dots at the back at 1" and 2" below the waist as shown in photograph 9. The flaws are easy to overlook both due to the location and the folds of the fabric. Otherwise, the dress has been professionally hand cleaned and preserved as an iconic example of Mr. Beene's design genius. SIZING MEASUREMENTS The size is unmarked though the dress best fits a U.S. Size 2 - 4 with attention to the following measurements. Please note that the hook at the waist could be moved up to 1.75" to provide more inches at the waist and through the bodice. Bust 33" Modified Empire Waist 25" Full Hips 52" Sleeve Length From Underarm to Cuff 14.5" Shoulder Length From Sleeve Seam to Seam 15" Total Length From Shoulder to Hem 53" Length From Shoulder to Modified Empire Waist 12.75" Belt measures 32" long from end to end x 1" wide.
