James Galanos was a design icon in the word of fashion throughout the late 20th century. His designs conveyed a sense of status, elegance, and ease. Of his exceptionally well-balanced aesthetic former first lady and dedicated Galanos client, Nancy Raegan stated that wearing Galanos “meant never going overboard or to extremes… you can wear one inside out, they are so beautifully made.” Showcasing this high caliber craftsmanship, this 1960s tea-length dress is made from a lustrous orange silk with a floral motif with undertones of copper and warm purples. From a shallow boat neckline, the bodice slopes gently into a short kimono sleeve. With only slight gathering to fit the bodice, a nice contrast is provided at the narrow waistband that shifts into full pleated skirt panels that are underlaid by a pencil skirt. The watercolor aspect of the round florals gives this dress an alluring yet hypnotic appeal that adds a new layer of charm to the design.
