Rare John Bates at Jean Varon ‘Cobweb’ Dress. This is a museum worthy piece. Created by John Bates, who created his label under the name of Jean Varon as he wanted to add a French twist, this dress was part of the 1973 Fall/Winter collection. At the time, this piece was an instant hit, being featured in the British Vogue 1973 September issue (please see photo). The Fashion Museum in Bath, England, has this dress in their collection, which is available to be seen by appointment. This dress was sold at Harrods. In black jersey, it has faceted-domed glass buttons and it features an embroidered tulle panel on the back with applications of beads and sequins forming spiders and cobwebs. The waist is high with a tie belt. It is marked UK size 12, but over 40 years on, I believe it is closer to a UK size 10. The bishop sleeves, fitted bodice and full, flared skirt give it a beautifully dramatic silhouette. This dress is a one of a kind, show-stopping piece.
