Mountain Artisans Faille Caftan With Velvet Appliques, 1970 s

About the Item

The Mountain Artisans label was founded in West Virginia C.1968 at the tail end of the hippie culture. The founders showcased patchwork creations utilizing traditional quilting skills and earned a prestigious Coty American Fashion Critics’ Award in 1972. Their fabrics were used by Parish-Hadley for interiors and Oscar de la Renta also incorporated their quilted fabrics in his designs. This caftan has a more sophisticated look than their Americana styles with a silk faille dress accented by large butterfly sleeves and a quilted applique pattern in lilac, grays, silver and purple. The metallic trim and heavy stitching adds to the textural design and provides the overall look with a 'rich hippie' vibe. The pullover construction partially buttons at the front bodice and zips at the back with full lining. Originally retailed at Neiman Marcus. Truly a one-of-a-kind artisan creation. CONDITION The caftan dress is in good to fair condition and was rarely worn though stored for many years and has age related issues. There is a general discoloration across the shoulders from storage and some brownish stains and spots as shown in photographs 12, 13, 14 and 15. These spots are at the back upper bodice and sleeves ... most likely from humidity in storage not perspiration as the interior lining is spotless. In addition, there are some spots on the inside of one bell sleeve which are not visible on the exterior. The quilted appliques show some fading to the velvet and puckering to the design. It has been professionally hand cleaned and remains a unique and fashionable piece in spite of the flaws. SIZING MEASUREMENTS The size is not marked though the caftan dress best fits a U.S. size 4 with attention to the following measurements. For visual reference, the mannequin in the photographs is a size 4.
