Handcrafted Multicolored Print Yo-Yo Quilt Kimono Sleeve Jacket, 1970s

This technicolored, handstitched jacket is constructed of hundreds of circular rosettes or “yo-yos” through a needlework technique known as “yo-yo quilting” which derives its name from the yo-yo toy that was popularized in the United states in the early to mid 20th century. Because of the compact nature of this quilting technique, many women of that times found it easy, and convenient to craft on the go, not to mention that it was also conservative on fabric consumption during the Depression era. The process of folding, and stitching together small circular medallions creates a rounded hill-and-valley texture that optically modifies any patterned or printed fabrics into organic instances of their former selves. Comprised of some yo-yos of intense hues, and some that are subdued neutrals, a motley color effect is created that is intensified when layered atop another garment. Loosely fitting, and a bit quirky, this delicate yet detailed handcrafted jacket can add a vintage-chic layer to an otherwise contemporary ensemble. Simple design such as the large scoop neckline, and wide kimono-style sleeves highlight the skilled fabric manipulation, and hand stitching. It is relatively light-weight, and suspends at approximately thigh level. Professionally cleaned and pressed.
