About the Item

Purchased in a Guatemalan market in 1971, this magnificent jacket is an artisanal example of folk costume down to its pockets lined in vintage flour sack. Striking and symmetrical, it is the focal point of any ensemble. Cropped Guatemalan jacket of heavyweight wool with black cotton notched lapel and dropped shoulders; black cotton and cord soutache trim at right breast pocket and two waist pockets, down arms and around all edges. Soutache bat motif across back shoulders surrounded by stylized soutache border; pockets lined in printed flour sack. No closures; unlined. fabric: wool, cotton noteworthy: dry clean only alterations: none condition: very good – excellent with one ½” discoloration at bottom left of bat measurements: lapel: shoulders: 16 ½” (natural shoulder); 20” (drop shoulder) bust: 40” (closed) sleeve: 21” from natural shoulder, 19 ½” from drop shoulder, 16 ½” from underarm sleeve circumference: 16” at upper arm, 10” at wrist waist: 39” length: 17” from natural shoulder, 15” from drop shoulder, 10” from underarm sweep: 39” label: none size: no size tag present; comparable to modern size small - medium depending on desired fit
