Late 19th Century Central Asian Silk Ikat Chapan Robe Coat

About the Item

A beautiful late 19th Century silk robe from Central Asia (likely Uzbekistan region) in a traditional Ikat pattern displaying shades of purple, peacock blue, yellow (almost chartreuse), ruby red and silvery gray all trimmed in red cotton banding with a few well placed tassels and lined in quilted cotton ticking. This special piece is from the estate and private collection of Peggy Slappey, a well traveled lady who passionately collected textile art from Central Asia. Part of Ms. Slappey's extensive collection was exhibited in 2016 at the Birmingham Museum of Art. Ms. Slappey once expressed her fascination with the Ikat robes by describing that the garments indicate ‘celebrations of life and its passages’ ... such a lovely description of the importance of valuing textile art and clothing. CONDITION The robe is in wearable condition and the fabric integrity is good but it shows quite a bit of age and wear including old repairs. The banding at the back of the collar and across the hemline is loose and frayed in spots. Please see the photographs for the clever repairs. The interior cotton lining is discolored primarily across the upper back as shown in photograph 15. The former owner carefully archived and properly stored the robe to ensure that its beauty would bring joy for many years to come. SIZING MEASUREMENTS The robe would have originally been made and worn by a man but the cut and style is appropriate for unisex wear. It will fit a variety of sizes and might best be described as a U.S. Medium. For visual reference, the mannequin in the photographs is a size 4. The following measurements are provided as a guideline and were taken with the front held closed as shown in the photographs.
