About the Item
A museum-quality piece of extreme rarity, this turn-of-the-century walking suit is exceptional for its extraordinary workmanship, condition, atypical silhouette and unheard-of large size. Whereas most suits of this era featured long jackets with nipped waists, this one incorporates a swing silhouette amplified by crochet gores and echoed in its modified lantern sleeves. As sturdy and stunning now as it was over a century ago.
Off white Irish crochet walking suit. Jacket features crochet middy collar with scalloped back; heavily embroidered cotton front and rear panels inset with nine crochet gores for sweeping silhouette. Modified crochet lantern sleeves with narrow Irish crochet lace wrist; four frog button closures with knotted tassels. Scalloped bottom edge; unlined. Skirt of heavily embroidered cotton with inverted Irish crochet gores around full circumference from knee to hem; free-hanging rear panel train with inverted Irish crochet gore. Flat trapunto stitch waistband and left Prym snap closures with top hooks and eyes; unlined.

This intricately hand crafted full-length jacket dates back to the late Edwardian era of the 1910s. This piece is a wonderful example of crochet and one of the best Circa has ever had in the collection. Derived from the French word for hook, crochet dates back to the early 19th century but gained renewed popularity during the 1910s and 1920s when more and more elaborate techniques were developed.
