About the Item

Beautiful French Art Deco children's parasol, with a lovely floral print of large daisies in mauve and brown. The handle is made of polychrome wood with a light beige and mauve tone. Circa 1930s Gorgeous antique French parasol dating from the early 20th century, Art Deco, circa 1930. The parasol is made of cotton fabric, with a light beige background and a beautiful floral design in shades of purple, lavender, and brown. The shaft is made of light-colored wood with a polychrome wooden handle, featuring a beige background and a mauve edge. There is documentary evidence that parasols were used as part of secular dress in Italy during the 17th century. At the end of the 18th century, this accessory became increasingly fashionable and frequently appeared in fashion plates that began to be published in France. Subsequently, the fashion for parasols spread throughout the Western world. Umbrellas were available in America in the early 19th century, possibly even earlier, and we know that Americans closely followed European fashion through imported magazines and fashion publications. During the 19th century, umbrellas were a key element in achieving the fashionable style of the time. For an upper-class woman, a pale complexion that required little or no makeup was essential, as it reinforced the 19th-century ideal of inactivity and dependence on her husband; it also distinguished her from the tanned masses who worked outdoors. Umbrellas were flattering accessories that readily adapted to the whims of fashion. Umbrella styles were constantly evolving, often influenced by the silhouettes, materials, embellishments, and colors of fashionable dresses, or by other accessories, such as handbags. Their undeniable charm explains why they appear so frequently in paintings of the period. In the late 18th and throughout the 19th centuries, an astonishing number of patents for umbrellas and parasols were registered in England and France. The first parasol ribs were made of cane or whalebone, and brass didn't appear until the 1830s. Steel began to be used in 1840 with Henry Holland's invention of tempered steel tubular ribs. This innovation was eclipsed by the work of Samuel Fox, who introduced a solid steel rib in 1847, followed in 1852 by U-shaped, sectioned ribs, which he marketed under the "Paragon" brand and advertised as the strongest of the time. The refinement of the parasol rib continued over the following decades. The introduction of the sewing machine in the 1860s—a pivotal event—spurred the industrialization and mass production of many fashionable items, including parasols. This parasol would be a wonderful addition to your collection of antique French parasols and would also be very attractive for interior decoration.
