Condition Report:
Very Good - A little mis-shaping to one of the red celluloid beads and a tiny element of unravelling to the silk thread tassel. This is consistent with age and does not detract from the appeal of the piece.
The Details...
This evening bag or dance purse is constructed from cream coloured celluloid and is circular in shape. Both sides of the bag are detailed with red and green flowers and leaves. Hanging from the base of the bag is a brown coloured silk thread tassel and suspended within the threads is a silver tone metal lipstick holder. The bag has a brown cord handle, which is detailed at either end with red coloured celluloid beads. The bag opens with a push clasp. Inside the bag, there is a mirror and a powder compartment with an original powder puff. The diameter of the bag is 7cm. The drop of the handle is 20cm and the length of the tassel is 15cm.
A Short History...
Celluloid was a highly popular material in jewellery and accessories manufacture during the 1920s. Newly pioneered injection molding processes, meant that cellulose could be used to produce many identical pieces at the same time. This resulted in the cost per item of celluloid pieces being very low and the material could therefore cater for post-war demands for affordable jewellery and accessories.
