About the Item

Swing into the 1960’s with a Jane Shilton handbag in red leather with a faux tortoise resin top handle. Alexander Shilton started his handbag company in London creating classic leather designs for the English market. He left his company in the capable hands of his secretary, Jane, while he fought in World War II. She kept the company going and altered manufacturing to aid in the war efforts. Not only was Alexander impressed, he was also truly in love and married Jane after the war renaming the company in her honor. Their designs in the 1960’s followed the mod trends and this bag combines the old fashioned look of a frame bag with a poppy red color that stands out in a crowd. It’s loaded with nice little details like star shaped gold tone hardware on the faux tortoise frame and a touch of leather on the handles. The push button closure opens to reveal a grosgrain lined interior with an open side pocket and mirror compact. It’s a cutie patootie with a wonderful back story. CONDITION Good vintage condition. The push button closure works well but shows some scratch marks to the gold tone metal. There is a little indented area on the backside of the handle that may have been from manufacture, please see photograph 8. Overall, the leather is in great condition and the bag looks rarely, if ever, used. MEASUREMENTS The body of the handbag measures 10” wide x 5.5” tall x 4.5” deep. The top handle measures 10” from end to end providing for a 3.25” drop. Though petite in silhouette, the bag can easily accommodate most cell phones.
