Extrait du célèbre livre d'Audubon "The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America", Imperial Bowen Edition (1845-1848), qui se compose de 150 estampes colorées à la main, réalisées à partir de plaques lithographiées. Le renard arctique, également appelé renard blanc, renard polaire ou renard des neiges, est un petit renard originaire des régions arctiques de l'hémisphère nord et commun dans tout le biome de la toundra arctique. Il est bien adapté à la vie dans des environnements froids et est surtout connu pour sa fourrure épaisse et chaude qui sert également de camouflage. La dernière grande réalisation de John James Audubon fut la création de "The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America" (édition impériale Bowen), réalisée en collaboration avec son ami, le révérend John Bachman (1790-1874), pasteur luthérien et naturaliste de Charleston, SC, qui rédigea le texte d'accompagnement. Au cours de l'été 1843, John James Audubon s'est embarqué avec son fils, John Woodhouse, pour une dernière expédition de dessin sur le fleuve Missouri afin de documenter et de dépeindre les mammifères à quatre pattes d'Amérique du Nord. Réalisée de 1845 à 1848 par l'éminent graveur de Philadelphie, John AT&T, cette série de 150 lithographies en noir et blanc a été entièrement coloriée à la main. Cette édition impériale de Bowen a été publiée en trois volumes de 50 estampes chacun en 1845, 1846 et 1848, soit un tirage total d'environ 300 exemplaires. Ces estampes ont été publiées au format folio impérial, également défini comme le format éléphant, mesurant 22 par 28 pouces. De nombreux mammifères ont été dessinés par John Woodhouse Audubon et les arrière-plans ont été réalisés par Victor Gifford Audubon. Biographie : John James Audubon (26 avril 1785, Les Cayes, Saint-Domingue (plus tard Haïti) - 27 janvier 1851 (à 65 ans) Manhattan, New York, États-Unis), né Jean-Jacques Audubon, est un ornithologue, naturaliste et peintre américain. Il s'est distingué par ses vastes études visant à documenter tous les types d'oiseaux américains et par ses illustrations détaillées décrivant les oiseaux dans leur habitat naturel. Son œuvre majeure, un livre de planches en couleurs intitulé The Birds of America (1827-1839), est considérée comme l'un des plus beaux ouvrages ornithologiques jamais réalisés. Audubon a identifié 25 nouvelles espèces.
