Quinze Dessins de Durer a Dufy Appartenant aux Collections des Musees Nationaux (Faces of Children. Fifteen Drawings from Durer to Dufy from the Collections of the National Museums), published by Editions Artistiques et Documentaires, Paris, and Daniel Jacomet, Editeur, Paris, and rendered and printed by Daniel Jacomet et Cie, Paris, 1968. The composition captures Reni s refined idealism and gentle psychological insight, translated through twentieth century printmaking with exceptional sensitivity to line and tonal nuance. Executed as a lithograph and pochoir on velin paper, archivally hinged on a velin support sheet as issued, this work measures 18.5 x 14 inches overall, with the image measuring approximately 11.024 x 8.86 inches. About the Artist: Guido Reni (1575–1642) was an Italian painter whose refined classicism, luminous palette, and idealized vision of beauty positioned him as one of the most influential masters of the early Baroque and among the most sought after artists of seventeenth century Europe, establishing a legacy of balance, harmony, and expressive restraint that continued to resonate across centuries of Western art. Born in Bologna, Reni trained at the Accademia degli Incamminati under Ludovico Carracci and was profoundly shaped by the reforming ideals of Annibale Carracci, whose return to nature, disciplined draftsmanship, and classical proportion formed the foundation of Reni s mature style. Drawing deeply from Raphaels serenity, Correggios softness, and the ideals of classical antiquity, Reni developed a distinctive visual language marked by silvery light, graceful movement, and an elevated spiritual tone, selectively absorbing the dramatic realism of Caravaggio while transforming it into something more lyrical, refined, and contemplative. His mythological scenes, devotional images, and monumental altarpieces were celebrated throughout Italy, France, and Spain for their emotional clarity, restrained drama, and idealized human form, influencing contemporaries such as Domenichino, Francesco Albani, and Simone Cantarini, and later shaping the academic traditions embraced by artists from Nicolas Poussin to Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres. The intellectual rigor, compositional balance, and psychological poise evident in Reni s work would later be admired by modern figures including Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray, who recognized in his art a timeless model for uniting structure, emotion, and purity of form. Reni s pursuit of ideal beauty and expressive calm established him as a touchstone for artists seeking order and proportion in opposition to excess, ensuring his lasting relevance within both historical scholarship and the contemporary market.
