In this piece, Henk Jan Sanderman transforms a panda into a gravity-defying acrobat. Crafted from painted porcelain on canvas, the panda is shown tumbling headfirst into the picture plane, frozen mid-motion in a curious blend of painting and sculpture.
Sanderman’s style here highlights the tension between balance and whimsy, reminding us of the fragile line between playfulness and control. The panda’s rounded form, rendered in stark black and white, contrasts beautifully against the minimal, pale background. The simplicity of the scene heightens the sense of humour while giving the subject monumental presence.
The palette is pared down—crisp white, deep black, soft grey, and a touch of pale blue at the base of the canvas—enhancing the sculpture’s bold silhouette. This understated colour use makes the work feel clean and contemporary, while the panda’s playful pose injects a sense of joy. “UPSIDE DOWN” invites viewers to smile while also considering the freedom of breaking boundaries.
Artist biography:
Painter/sculptor Henk Jan Sanderman (1975), born in the Netherlands, currently lives and works in a small town in the middle of Holland. In his studio he renders oil paintings, as well as casting sculptures in porcelain and bronze. The artist’s work defines itself as humorous realism, conveying objects and various subject matter in great detail against a black and white background. In the same hyper-realistic style as his paintings, Henk Jan creates sculptures and wall artwork imbued with impressive life-like accuracy.
His main focus is humorous hyperrealism painting where he sets his subject matter against a white or black background, allowing more space for interaction whilst demonstrating and emphasising intense attention to detail. The artist’s works have an endearing ambience, influenced with their light-hearted aspects. Current works demonstrative innovative merging of the canvas and sculpture, providing a contemporary body of installations.
His works has been featured at Palet magazine, Atelier magazine, Coda museum, Stadsmuseum Harderwijk and museum De Fundatie.
In 2014 Henk Jan participated in the television program "Sterren op het Doek" and created a portrait of Seth Gaaikema. In 2015, he was asked to return for the final season of "Sterren op het Doek", due to being one of the best artists of the past nine seasons.

Henk Jan Sanderman est un peintre néerlandais. Après 12 ans d'expérience en marketing dans un environnement commercial, Sanderman a changé de cap et a commencé à enseigner et à pratiquer la peinture à plein temps. Sa combinaison idéale d'interaction sociale et de création, un véritable maître peintre. Des portraits de Sanderman ont déjà été exposés dans les magazines Palet , Atelier, le musée Coda, le Stadsmuseum Harderwijk et le Museum De Fundatie. En 2014, Sanderman a participé à l'émission télévisée Sterren op het Doek et a réalisé un portrait de Seth Gaaikema. En 2015, il a été sollicité pour la dernière saison de Sterren op het Doek avec Omroep MAX renvoyant les meilleurs artistes des neuf dernières saisons. Sanderman a été autorisé à faire le portrait de Ria Bremer, qui a finalement choisi le portrait peint par Sanderman. Après l'expérience qu'il a acquise en réalisant des portraits dans le maître de la peinture très réaliste, il s'est concentré sur la réalisation d'une œuvre qui lui tient à cœur, l'œuvre humoristique. L'œuvre de Sanderman est un hyperréalisme humoristique, dans lequel il met en scène ses objets de manière très détaillée sur un fond noir et blanc.
