This exceptional 19th-century Grand Tour bronze of the Neapolitan Fisherman—also historically identified as Mercury (Hermes)—is a refined cast produced by the renowned Fonderia Giorgio Sommer, one of the most respected artistic foundries active in Naples during the Grand Tour era. The sculpture is signed “Fonderia Giorgio Sommer”, underscoring both its authenticity and its distinguished provenance.
The composition derives from a celebrated ancient Roman bronze discovered in 1823 at Pompeii, in the House of the Small Fountain (Casa della Fontana Piccola), where it functioned as an ornamental fountain figure. The antique original, now preserved in the National Archaeological Museum, Naples, captivated 19th-century travelers, artists, and collectors, inspiring high-quality Grand Tour reproductions for Europe’s and America’s most cultivated interiors and gardens.
The figure is portrayed as a youthful fisherman seated on a rocky outcrop, his relaxed contrapposto animated by subtle movement in the limbs and torso.
