Nichola Theakston (1967) has established herself as one of the UK’s foremost contemporary sculptors working within the animal genre.
With the ''Arctic Bear'' Nichola shows how exquisite she can capture the feelings and expressions in an animal. Although the bronze sculpture has an edition of 24 plus 2 artist's proofs, every piece has a different hand painted patina, which makes each piece unique.
Nichola's work focuses on the vulnerability of existence and coexistence. She questions our perception of an animal's "personality" and strives to portray elements of our shared experience. It is important for Nichola that animals are displayed with attention and that her images also invite empathy and reflection.
With ''Arctic Bear'', Nichola Theakston captures the quiet strength and vulnerability of one of the Arctic’s most iconic animals. Rendered with sensitivity and restraint, the fragment draws attention to texture, form, and expression rather than detail alone. The bear emerges as both powerful and fragile, reflecting the tension between resilience and environmental uncertainty. This work invites the viewer to pause and consider the delicate balance of life in the Arctic and humanity’s relationship with the natural world.
Studying art at the Jacob Kramer College of Art, then a degree in Fine Art at the Exeter College of Art and Design and finally a Masters-degree in Ceramics at Cardiff College of Art and Design, Nichola has combined academic excellence with an international reputation as a preeminent sculptor.
Nichola is collected enthusiastically by many who appreciate her exceptional natural ability and skill, coupled with sensitivity and awareness of her subject.
