Nichola Theakston (1967) has established herself as one of the UK’s foremost contemporary sculptors working within the animal genre.
Primates are Nichola's favorite subject. In her words: 'The notion that an individual creature may experience some ‘otherness’ or spiritual dimension beyond our understanding of its instinctive animal behaviors, is the premise behind much of my work, and portraiture a vehicle that I use to explore feeling and expression. Primates are an obvious and compelling choice of subject given their genetic proximity to human kind'.
With 'Macaque Icon' Nichola Theakston presents the macaque as a contemporary icon—both familiar and unsettling. Through a balance of strength and vulnerability, the sculpture invites reflection on our close relationship with the animal world and the ways in which we project human identity onto non-human forms. The work echoes traditions of religious and cultural iconography, elevating the macaque to a symbol of introspection, intelligence, and shared evolution. Theakston’s sensitive treatment of form and expression encourages the viewer to pause, confront, and reconsider the boundaries between humanity and nature.
With the ''Macaque Icon'' Nichola shows how exquisite she can capture the feelings and expressions in an animal. Although the bronze sculpture has an edition of 15, every piece has a different hand painted patina, which makes each piece unique.
Nichola's work focuses on the vulnerability of existence. She questions our perception of an animal's "personality" and strives to portray elements of our shared experience. It is important for Nichola that animals are displayed with attention and that her images also invite empathy and reflection.
Studying art at the Jacob Kramer College of Art, then a degree in Fine Art at the Exeter College of Art and Design and finally a Masters-degree in Ceramics at Cardiff College of Art and Design, Nichola has combined academic excellence with an international reputation as a preeminent animalist.
Nichola is collected enthusiastically by many who appreciate her exceptional natural ability and skill, coupled with sensitivity and awareness of her subject.
