Décorer avec fine art prints - qu'il s'agisse de figurative prints, abstract prints ou d'une autre variété - a toujours été un moyen pratique de donner vie à un espace et de faire entrer dans votre maison les œuvres d'un artiste que vous aimez.
Poursuivie dans les années 1960 et 1970, en grande partie par les artistes Pop attirés par ses associations avec la production de masse, la publicité, l'emballage et la sérialité, ainsi que par ceux qui contestaient la primauté du coup de pinceau de l'expressionniste abstrait, la gravure a été adoptée dans les années 1980 par des peintres et des artistes conceptuels allant de David Salle et Elizabeth Murray à Adrian Piper et Sherrie Levine.
La gravure est le transfert d'une image d'une surface à une autre. Un artiste prend un matériau tel que la pierre, le métal, le bois ou la cire, le sculpte, l'incise, le dessine ou le marque d'une image, l'encre ou la peint, puis transfère l'image sur une feuille de papier ou un autre matériau.
Les tirages d'art sont souvent confondus avec leurs équivalents plus commerciaux. Après tout, notre lien le plus étroit avec l'image imprimée est constitué par les journaux, les magazines et les livres produits en masse, et beaucoup de gens ne se rendent pas compte que même si les estampes sont des éditions, elles partent d'une image originale créée par un artiste avec l'intention de la reproduire en petit nombre. Les tirages d'art sont créés en éditions strictement limitées - 20 ou 30 ou peut-être 50 - et sont toujours basés sur une image créée spécifiquement pour faire partie d'une édition.
Nombreux sont ceux qui pensent que Revere, l'artiste néerlandais REMBRANDT, est un peintre, mais ils ne savent peut-être pas qu'il était également graveur.
