Ellen von Unwerth est une réalisatrice et photographe dont les images audacieuses et érotiques de femmes ont laissé une marque indélébile sur le paysage visuel du monde de la mode.
Née à Francfort, en Allemagne, Mme von Unwerth a été mannequin à Paris pendant près de dix ans avant de se tourner vers la photographie. En 1989, ses images de Claudia Schiffers pour une campagne de jeans Guess, reprenant le style ludique et féminin des pin-up des années 1950, ont valu à Schiffer et à von Unwerth une grande attention. Au fil des ans, son travail a été régulièrement présenté dans des magazines tels que Interview, Vanity Fair, Vogue, I-D et The Face, apparaissant sur les couvertures et dans des contextes éditoriaux et commerciaux. En 1991, elle a remporté le premier prix du Festival international de la photographie de mode.
La séance photo de Drew Barrymore en 1995 pour le magazine Playboy est l'une des œuvres les plus populaires de Von Unwerth. Associée à une série de couvertures d'albums pour des artistes tels que Janet Jackson et Britney Spears, elle lui a permis de se faire connaître en tant que photographe de célébrités au-delà des frontières de l'univers de la mode. Les photos de Von Unwerth ont un aspect et une sensation distinctifs, avec des couleurs saturées et des compositions denses, tout en rendant également hommage, dans certains cas, à de grands photographes du 20e siècle.
L'œuvre de 2015 Tree of Love, Bavaria, dans laquelle un modèle nu est allongé dans le creux en forme de cœur d'un énorme tronc en décomposition, rappelle l'utilisation sensuelle de la géométrie du corps dans les compositions d'Edward Weston. Et l'éclairage dramatique de Tic Tac Toe de 2010, qui montre une femme légèrement vêtue posant dans une rue de la ville la nuit, évoque la photographie atmosphérique de Helmut Newtond'un mannequin portant la veste Le Smoking d'Yves St. Laurent, prise pour le Vogue français en 1975.
Von Unwerth a publié plusieurs livres de ses photographies, dont Revenge, en 2003, et Fräulein, en 2009. Ces volumes ont été rejoints par un autre présentant les photos de sa série "Heimat", dans laquelle elle combine de manière ludique des tropes visuels de la vie traditionnelle bavaroise avec l'érotisme et l'esprit qui la caractérisent. Elle est représentée par plusieurs marchands, dont la Staley-Wise Gallery, à New York, et la Galerie Trabant, à Kitzbühel, en Autriche.
