This sterling silver necklace by John Prip exemplifies his bold, sculptural approach to metalsmithing and his deep engagement with form and movement. The pendant consists of three interlocking, disc-like elements, each with fluid, curved surfaces that appear to fold and twist into one another. John Prip (1922–2009) was a pioneering American metalsmith whose innovative approach helped redefine the boundaries of silversmithing and industrial design in the 20th century.
Born in New York to Danish silversmiths, he trained in Denmark under master silversmith Evald Nielsen before returning to the U.S. in 1948 to teach at the pioneering School for American Craftsmen. In 1953, he co-founded Shop One in Rochester, a groundbreaking gallery showcasing contemporary craft. As Designer-Craftsman in Residence at Reed
Barton (1957–1960), Prip enjoyed rare creative freedom, developing innovative prototypes that blended artistry with industrial production. He later taught at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Rhode Island School of Design, influencing generations of makers. A founding member of the Society of North American Goldsmiths (1971), Fellow of the American Crafts Council (1977), and recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts grant (1986), Prip’s dynamic, risk-taking silverwork remains in major museum collections nationwide.
