A fob is an adornment or a seal that hangs from the ribbon or chain of a pocket watch. Its purpose is to decorate or add weight to the watch chain itself making it easier for the watch to be withdrawn from a pocket.
A very unusual and highly-intricate Italian fob! Crafted in 18k yellow gold, this pyramid-shaped locket is adorned in Etruscan-style wirework. The wirework incorporates flower motifs, scrolling borders, and three-dimensional balls. Two sides of the pyramid feature oval cut tourmaline stones, which are held within bezel settings. The bottom of the fob features an emerald cut tourmaline stone, which is additionally held within a bezel setting. All of the stones display a lovely soft purple hue, which wonderfully contrasts the vibrant gold of the piece. The bottom of the fob opens to reveal a square shaped compartment, which would be perfect for storing a small, sentimental memento. The piece features a complementary 18k gold bail. The inside compartment features a "K18" purity mark and an illegible maker's mark. A truly spectacular and highly-intricate piece, this fob would make a wonderful addition to any Victorian jewelry collection!
Measurements: The fob hangs 1 1/8" long, including the ring bail at the top. The base measures 7/8" long and 3/4" wide.
Condition: The overall condition of the fob is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the gold setting. Both of the tourmaline stones are secure and intact. The locket fob opens and closes securely, and the complementary bail is in working order.
