Albert Gilbert was more than a designer for Patek Philippe — he was a sculptor of time. From the mid-1950's onward, he created some of the most daring, imaginative, and collectible time only watches in the company’s history. His works, from the asymmetrical “Asymétrie” ref. 3424 to the jeweled Tutti Frutti line and the sculptural Ricochet, are now treated like museum pieces. Many trade in the mid to high five figures, some into six, a testament to how collectors now regard Gilbert as a design icon in the world of horology. Among his masterpieces is the “Manta Ray,” ref. 2554, a watch with broad flaring sides and sweeping lines that seem to glide like the wings of its namesake. Patek itself paid homage to this model decades later with the ref. 5100 re-edition for the new millenium in year 2000. For collectors, the “Manta Ray” is a legend: an avant-garde shape, fully Gilbert yet restrained, and an embodiment of mid-century modern watch design. While most of Gilbert's watches were mens models, this ladies version embodies all of that pedigree while offering something else: exquisite beauty in a package for ladies. Its 18K gold case curves outward like sculpted fins, then narrows with elegance toward the lugs, catching light and shadow with every movement of the wrist. Il n'est pas surprenant qu'une Patek Philippe détienne le record mondial de vente aux enchères pour une montre ( 31,2 millions de dollars pour une Patek Grandmaster Chime, vendue chez Christie's). Réputée pour son savoir-faire impeccable et ses garde-temps les plus compliqués jamais créés, la marque est considérée par beaucoup comme l'apogée de la haute horlogerie. Les collectionneurs aiment tout simplement Patek Philippe watches.

La maison a été fondée à Genève en 1839 par les expatriés polonais Antoni Patek et Franciszek Czapek. Czapek quitte l'entreprise et, en 1845, Patek s'associe à l'horloger français Jean Adrien Philippe. Ce fut le début d'une belle amitié.

S'adressant au gratin européen, le couple compte parmi ses clients Tolstoï, le pape Pie IX et la reine Victoria, ainsi que la comtesse Koscowicz de Hongrie, pour laquelle il crée la première montre-bracelet de fabrication suisse en 1868. Ils s'intéressaient également au marché américain et ont conclu en 1851 un accord avec Tiffany Co. qui est toujours en vigueur aujourd'hui.

Pendant la Grande Dépression, les frères Jean et Charles Stern, qui avaient déjà fourni des cadrans de montres à Patek Philippe, ont racheté l'entreprise, qui est toujours dirigée par la famille Stern aujourd'hui.

Sous les Stern, la maison a développé certains de ses modèles les plus célèbres, notamment la Calatrava, une montre habillée élégamment minimale introduite en 1932 et nommée d'après la croix de Calatrava (le logo de la société depuis 1887), et la Nautilus, la première montre de sport de la marque, conçue par le légendaire designer Gérald Genta en 1976.

Malgré la longévité de la maison, on dit qu'elle a fabriqué moins d'un million de montres Patek, ce qui rend chacune d'entre elles d'autant plus convoitée. (Les pièces de la marque attirent naturellement les contrefacteurs - assurez-vous de savoir comment repérer une fausse montre Patek Philippe.)
