Einar Samuel Luterkort (1905–1981) was a Swedish sculptor, ceramist, and artist whose work spanned ceramics, bronze sculpture, and drawing, and whose creative output left its mark on public spaces and the decorative arts in Sweden during the mid-20th century. He was born on 13 November 1905 in Traneberg, Stockholm, the son of Isak Wilhelm Luterkort and Lea Felländer, and from an early age showed an artistic inclination that he would pursue with dedication throughout his life. Luterkort’s formal art education began at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (Kungliga Konsthögskolan) in Stockholm, where he studied from 1926 to 1929. He then broadened his artistic horizons with further studies abroad, spending time at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1929, the Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome in 1930, where he received his first award and held his first solo exhibition, and the Academie der Bildenden Künste in Munich in 1931.
Upon returning to Sweden in 1931, Luterkort settled in Abrahamsberg, where he established a ceramics workshop complete with a stoneware kiln in the basement of his home. It was here that he began experimenting with glazes and forms, and he often collaborated with younger artists — notably the then-student Stig Lindberg — testing glazes and techniques that contributed to the era’s rich ceramic culture. In the early 1930s he was also employed as a designer at the prominent ceramics firm Upsala-Ekeby AB (UE). During his time at Upsala-Ekeby, Luterkort worked on a range of pieces including vases, bowls, plates, and figurines, many featuring relief decoration and expressive, stylized figures that exemplified the Art Deco influence of the period.
1935 was a significant year for Luterkort both personally and professionally: he married the Swedish actress Carola Ingrid Margareta Eklundh (Ingrid Luterkort) and participated successfully in a major exhibition at Galerie Modern in Stockholm. Around this time he also created designs for Motala Lervarufabrik, producing vases with striking dark blue, green, or red glazes. While his career in ceramics remained important, Luterkort’s artistic interests continued to broaden, and by the late 1930s and beyond he was increasingly recognized for his work as a sculptor.
Luterkort became known for a series of public sculptures that are still seen in Swedish towns and cities today. These include whimsical and expressive works such as Pojken och guldgåsen (“The Boy and the Golden Goose”) in Varberg, Karl Erik and Vera in Mariestad, Väntande Vera and the bronze Panter på trädstam (“Panther on a Tree Trunk”) in Nynäshamn and Västerås, and Pojken och laxfiskaren in Sturehov. His sculptures often depicted animals in motion or repose as well as figure studies and portraits, revealing an artist deeply attuned to both form and character. Several churches in Sweden also feature his reliefs and religious imagery, underscoring the breadth of his public work.
In addition to his studio practice, Luterkort was active as a teacher of ceramics and sculpture, notably at the Viggbyholm School in Täby, a position he would hold for many years. His dual life as both maker and educator allowed him to influence subsequent generations of Swedish artists. Although his ceramic pieces are rarely signed, and often overlooked in the market compared to his sculptural works, they remain sought after by collectors, particularly those produced at Upsala-Ekeby in the 1930s and 1940s.
Einar Luterkort lived and worked in Stockholm’s outskirts for most of his life. After a long career bridging studio work, public art, and teaching, he died on 17 May 1981 in Täby. Today he is remembered as a versatile and expressive artist whose contributions to ceramics and sculpture enrich Sweden’s artistic heritage.
