This late 19th-century French tabletop photographic viewfinder (Stereoscope) was designed for the viewing of glass photographic plates, allowing users to examine images in magnified detail and, in some cases, with stereoscopic effect. The maker’s original brass plaque identifies the firm as EDUCA, Société Anonyme, located at 70 rue de l’Aqueduc, Paris, and notes Appareils et procédés brevetés, S.G.D.G. EDUCA was active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and specialized in educational, scientific, and photographic instruments, supplying schools, institutions, and private clients with devices intended for both instruction and visual entertainment.
