His architectural studies at the Technical University of Karlsruhe under Egon Eiermann – one of the key figures of post-war functional modernism – represented less a mere education than an early engagement with the structural questions of contemporary design. Only two years later, Lohmeyer accepted a teaching position at Alexandria University in Cairo, an experience that broadened his perspective on architecture and product design toward an international modernity. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Lohmeyer worked as a freelance architect and furniture designer, focusing primarily on serial furniture he developed for Wilkhahn. This collaboration is exemplary of the professionalisation of the German furniture industry during that period: it combined conceptual clarity with the ambition of industrial reproducibility – two principles that continue to shape Wilkhahn’s identity today. Among Lohmeyer’s most renowned designs is the Model 400, created in 1960. Due to its comparatively short production span of only about five years, it has become one of his most sought-after works worldwide. Manufacturer – Wilkhahn: Design with Conviction Founded in 1907 by Christian Wilkening and Friedrich Hahne as a small chair factory in Eimbeckhausen, Lower Saxony, Wilkhahn evolved under the direction of the founders’ sons, Fritz Hahne and Adolf Wilkening, into a design brand of international standing. In the 1950s, the company deliberately sought dialogue with designers influenced by the ideals of the Bauhaus and the Deutscher Werkbund, including Walter Heyn, Herbert Hirche, and Georg Leowald. With them began a decisive reorientation: away from traditional cabinetmaking toward modern industrial design that unites functionality, aesthetics, and sustainability. Wilkhahn thus became a pioneer of a design ethos that remains relevant today: “better utility value, enduring form, and longevity” – not as slogans, but as lived principles. Today, Wilkhahn ranks among the world’s leading manufacturers of high-quality office furniture – a synonym for “Design made in Germany”, where craftsmanship, innovation, and responsibility are translated into timeless form. Materials and Condition The solid cherrywood frame has been fully restored by a certified professional restorer. The wicker elements show only a few minor imperfections – documented in the images – which do not affect the chair’s structural integrity or visual balance. The seat and back cushions were newly fabricated in a specialised workshop and upholstered with a luxurious wool bouclé fabric in the colour “nacre rosée” by the Italian textile house Dedar. Its subtle texture conveys both artisanal precision and a contemporary, understated elegance.
