This elegant and finely woven Antique Shirvan Rug is a testament to the sophisticated weaving artistry of the East Caucasus, dating to the early 20th Century. Measuring 82 x 171 cm (approx. 2'8" x 5'7"), its narrow, elongated shape suggests its original use as a prayer rug or a delicate runner, perfect for a niche, entryway, or bedside.
The composition features a dramatic, dark navy blue/indigo main field, which serves as a striking backdrop for three distinct, stacked medallions. The central motif is a highly detailed diamond (lozenge) shape in madder red, while the flanking medallions on the ends are set on a contrasting cream/ivory ground and contain bold, stylized cruciform (cross) elements, characteristic of certain Shirvan or Marasali substyles. The field is further enhanced by subtle geometric filler motifs and angular outlines in camel, terra cotta, and blue.
