This striking Antique Caucasian Kazak Rug is a robust and visually dynamic tribal textile from the South Caucasus, dating to circa 1870. Measuring 135 x 252 cm (approx. 4'5" x 8'3"), its elongated format and dense geometric design make it a commanding art piece for any hallway, library, or entrance area.
The central field features a rich indigo/navy blue ground, which is densely patterned with a repetitive geometric design composed of colorful triangles, diamonds, and box motifs. These intricate figures, rendered in madder red, gold, green, and deep blue, create a vibrant, textured look across the field. This complex all-over geometric pattern is characteristic of certain Gendje or transitional Kazak weaving traditions.
The rug is framed by exceptionally wide and bold borders. The primary border is a saturated madder red field featuring large, repeating geometric lozenges and intricate star motifs in cream, green, and blue. Woven from durable, high-quality hand-spun wool with a thick, plush pile, and colored exclusively with deep, enduring natural dyes, this rug embodies the strength and enduring heritage of Caucasus village weaving.
