This magnificent Antique Bordjalou (Borchalo) Kazak Rug is a robust and geometrically powerful tribal textile from the South Caucasus, dating to the late 19th century. Measuring 145 x 242 cm (approx. 4'9" x 7'11"), its versatile size and dramatic, highly patterned design make it a commanding focal point for any collector or interior. The central field features a rich, luminous madder red ground, dominated by a vertical column of large, stylized diamond (lozenge) medallions. These monumental motifs are intricately rendered, often alternating in color and showcasing bold geometric fill and prominent latch-hook extensions. The space between the main medallions is filled with smaller, brightly colored geometric symbols, creating a dense and visually energetic composition. The composition is framed by an exceptionally wide and complex border system. The main border features repeating, angular 'box' or latch-hook motifs set against a warm ivory ground, providing powerful contrast and strong visual rhythm. Woven from durable, high-quality hand-spun wool with a characteristically thick, plush pile, and colored exclusively with deep, saturated natural dyes, this rug embodies the primitive strength and lasting artistic appeal of the Bordjalou tradition.
