This antique Persian Sarab runner, woven between 1870 and 1890, exemplifies the tribal workshop traditions of northwest Iran. Measuring approximately 3 ft x 18 ft (5.017 sq. m), it belongs to the gallery runner class—ideal for extended corridors and transitional spaces. Constructed with a wool pile on a cotton warp and weft, the piece showcases a medium 6 mm pile height and a balanced, sturdy handle suitable for antique utilitarian textiles. Its age, structure, and materials place it firmly in the late-19th-century Sarab weaving tradition known for geometric precision and architectural layouts.
The design features a longitudinal arrangement of repeating hexagonal medallions linked along a central axis. Stepped panels, latch-hook geometry, angular rosettes, and sawtooth ornamentation fill the field with rhythmic Tribal linearity. Warm rust brown, pale beige, and deep navy define the palette, with golden tan, steel blue-gray, and dark brick red accents adding layered contrast. The darker border frames the lighter field, creating strong visual depth and emphasizing the structural geometry inherent to Sarab runners.
Hand knotted with a symmetric (Turkish) knot at an estimated 100–150 KPSI, the rug offers a durable, medium-density wool surface supported by a woven cotton foundation without adhesives.
