Ceramic Swan Animalia Bird Table Lamps in Pearl White, a Pair 1980s
Located in Oklahoma City, OK
Pair of two whimsical ceramic swan sculptural table lamps. Each ceramic lamp is identical and showcases a swan, in repose, looking downward with its wings outstretched and displayed. At the bottom of each swan, are curled waves resembling a pond or water feature as though the bird is floating on top of the water. The color of these beautiful Animalia birds is in a pure white, with a pearlized pearlescent hue glazed on top. The lamp reaches out from the top of each swan and includes a button switch. Each cord with plug is strung through the bottom and features a molded divot at the base for the cord to come out making the lamps sturdy and not resting on each cord. Each lamp is affixed to a ceramic base in the same hue and glaze. How We Would Style Them: A dramatic pair such as these will add whimsy in any room. Our favorites, of course, would be the following: Nursery: In a nod to Spring, and rebirth, this would be a symbolic and appropriate form of lighting for a nursery. Boy or girl, the white pair will be a subtle tribute to a new little one. Placed on either side of a dresser, or, as some new mothers do, on either side of a twin bed or daybed. Because sometimes it’s just easier, and for a better piece of mind, to sleep next to a new baby! Child’s Room: Imagine a brightly lacquered French blue pair of nightstands on either side of a twin bed. chinoiserie wallpaper (Hello to all my Grand Millenials!) gracing the walls. And crisp white bedding and sheets in a matching pattern to the chintz wallpaper. Caprani flush mount lighting at the ceiling, and a fringe ottoman and matching chair at the side. A room fit for a little prince or princess. Finally, a Palm Springs or Hollywood Regency Style home. In a foyer or dining room, we see this pair placed aptly on a brightly colored...

Monumental South Pacific Bamboo 1940s Table Lamp Tiki Rattan McGuire
Located in Peoria, AZ
MONUMENTAL BAMBOO & WALNUT POLYNESIAN STYLE TABLE LAMP In the Manner of McGuire & Wakefield Circa 1947-1950 At the very beginning of the Post-War Polynesian or South Pacific craze which took over America during the late forties and fifties, there were precious few importers of fine bamboo furnishings. John & Elinore McGuire set up shop in California to do just that and their works are legendary for quality and durabiity. The time required to cut, soak, bend and shape bamboo into permanently sculpted forms was substantial and the exotic material was only available in quantity in the South Pacific. This lamp is an extremely rare, early example of a Bamboo lamp done in Polynesian (later Tiki) style. You seldom see any of these lamps, because they were very scarce new and even fewer have survived the past 70 years since their manufacture. It was likely created & imported in very small numbers around 1950 and sold through an early importer such as McGuire. Many bamboo importers were direct-to-decorator importers who advertised in Interiors or House & Garden magazine. The shape is based on the style of bamboo work used to create thatched huts and housing in the South Pacific islands - bamboo, cut, soaked and shaped and then tied with cane binding. This one has a double stacked oversized walnut base to provided stability to this enormous lamp...

Rare Rembrandt Lamp! Iconic Mid Century Modern "Twilight Zone" Lamp MCM 1950s
Located in Peoria, AZ
RARE MARVELOUS MODERNISM! REMBRANDT MCM LAMP! "Twilight Zone" " "Third From The Sun" HISTORIC MID CENTURY LIGHTING! ATOMIC AWESOME! DIMENSIONS: HEIGHT: 38.5" SHADE: 19" MILK GLASS DIFFUSER FABRIC SHADE WITH TEXTURED GOLD FOIL LINING CIRCA 1953 WOW! THIS IS IT! The famous wildly modern Rembrandt lamp featured in the 1960 Twilight Zone episode "Third From The Sun". In this the 14th episode of Rod Serling's Sci-Fi masterpiece two scientists plan to escape their doomed world which is about to have a nuclear war. This modernist Rembrandt lamp was used in the lead character's home, right next to some modern art, to help present an otherworldly & futuristic decor. The viewers don't know that this world is not Earth until the end of the show, but the futuristic decor, unusual camera angles and unusual vehicle sounds were subtle hints! A timeless part of television history and a coup for Rembrandt lamp designers to be chosen to depict the most advanced lamp design! This lamp was expensive new and production was never as high as their lesser quality competition. The result is that now these lamps are becoming impossible finds. The few owners privileged enough to own one never let them go. They are far too cool! Now that brash mid century optimism and outrageousness makes them even more wonderful than when they were new! This one is in very fine vintage condition with all the expected patina and minor blemishes time takes on metal, glass, wood and enamel. The fabric lamp shade with its gold foil textured lining is lost technology that would be impossible to reproduce today at any price and is also in very fine vintage condition. This showpiece lamp features a giant "Mogul" socket which was used in most floor lamps and large table lamps prior to 1955, One will be provided with the lamp, and they are still available. It truly is a modern miracle to find this tall 39" monumental lamp! Displays beautifully! If you've ever wanted to have otherworldly decor in your interiors - this is your opportunity! If you haven't seen the episode, it is a must watch...

“Eye of the Pyramid” in Lucite by Bijan Bahar
Located in Palm Springs, CA
A monumental four-part sculpture that fits together to form a four-sided pyramid titled "Eye of the Pyramid" by the noted late artist Bijan Bahar. Mr Bahar sadly passed away a couple of years ago. We had the pleasure of getting to know him as he spent his last few years in Palm Springs. This was created in the late 1980s and is signed and numbered 5/6. It is in good age appropriate condition but has been recently re-polished. There are some minor marks from handling but nothing major. There is some cloudiness to the lucite from age. Note the bottom is sanded to a Frost finish by the artist. Each piece is signed and numbered. It was purchased directly from the artist and his team re-polished it. Please note that Bijan blunted the points of the tops for safety reasons when he created the sculpture. A bio af the artist follows: Museum Shows / Collections Some of Commissions / Collections Irvine Foundation, Los Angeles, CA Mr. R. Lichtenstein, Int. Agam Kinetic Space Divider Sculpture Limited Edition Artist Proof Lucite Stand
Located in Miami Beach, FL
Artist: Yaacov Agam, Israeli (1928-) Title: Space Divider Medium: Polished metal kinetic sculpture Edition: 19/25 Rotates at top Signed on side of piece - Agam on the underside is the number. On stand 47” tall 7” x 7” Piece only 7” wide by 9” by 2 7/8” wide normal tarnish and wear It comes with the magazine cover of the artist and the custom made Lucite base. Artist Biography from the Guggenheim Yaacov Agam B. 1928, RISHON-LE-ZION, PALESTINE Yaacov Agam was born in Rishon-le-Zion, Palestine (now Israel), in 1928, the son of a rabbi and kabbalist, Yehoshua Gibstein. He studied at the Bezalel Academy in Jerusalem under Mordecai Ardon in 1946, moved to Zurich and then Paris, and studied at the Atelier d'art abstrait and at the Académie de la grande chaumière. While in Zurich, he met and was influenced by artist and teacher Johannes Itten, who was propagating Bauhaus ideas; he also found inspiration in Vasily Kandinsky's defense of abstraction, ber das Geistige in der Kunst. Insbesondere in der Malerei (On the Spiritual in Art: And Painting in Particular, 1911). His first solo exhibition was at the Galerie Craven in Paris in 1953, entitled Peintures en Mouvement (Paintings in movement), where he showed two series of early work. In one, grids of painted strips that incorporated different designs on opposite sides created images that merged and changed as spectators shifted their viewing position (a type of lenticular print that eventually became known as an Agamograph). In the other, his Transformable Pictures (Images transformables, 1953–61), viewers could manually activate works and rearrange their visual elements. While not the first Optical-Kinetic artist, Agam encouraged spectator participation at a time when such strategies were rare. He exhibited, along with other pioneers of Kinetic art including Alexander Calder and Jean Tinguely, at the Le mouvement (Movement) exhibition at the Galerie Denise René in 1955. He continued to produce abstract, Kinetic work that incorporated light, sound, and viewer participation. He also produced many public commissions, including a moving salon environment at the Elysée Palace in Paris in 1972. In the space, walls were covered with lenticular imagery; transparent doors were included; and a sculpture was placed on a Kinetic carpet. In all, the environment shifted according to the viewer's position. In 1979, Agam was asked to make a work of art to commemorate the peacemaking efforts between Anwar el-Sadat and Prime Minister Menachem Begin...

Calibrated to Balance, hanging sculpture by Monica Guggisberg Philip Baldwin
Located in London, GB
'Calibrated to Balance' is a unique red, green, yellow, teal and amber hand-blown and cut glass hanging artwork with steel frame by the American and Swiss artists, Philip Baldwin and Monica Guggisberg. Exquisitely handblown and cut to the highest quality and refinement, the elements have been composed and suspended on a steel frame ready for wall hanging. Increasingly the artists have become more sculptural in focus, while seeking to imbue their work with a deep connection to archetypal forms and shapes, and striving for the highest level of craftsmanship. They address eternal symbols of human culture and history, primarily through blown glass, but also using steel, and constructions in other materials. Baldwin (1947, New York) and Guggisberg (1955, Bern) have been a collaborative team for over forty years. They share an instinctive appreciation for the subtle blending of art and design, functionality and abstract expression, combined with a love of material – especially glass. The list of museums and collections which have acquired their works is long and impressive. Individual showings, as well as participation in group shows, have given them opportunities to present their works at leading galleries and in major museums in Europe, Japan and the United States and their works rank among the best to be found in the international glass art scene. Working freelance, they have also designed successful products for international glass manufacturers since 1985. Their clients have included renowned firms like Rosenthal, Steuben, Corning and Venini. Over time their work has developed its own distinctive signature, based in Italian cold-working (battuto) combined with the Swedish overlay process for layering colours. They have been pioneers in adapting these techniques and in creating a distinct expression of their own. Colour, light, texture, pattern, and shape together reveal an undercurrent of meaning and value, adhering to the simplest of forms and clear lines. Over the years they have become more sculptural in focus, while seeking to imbue their work with a deep connection to archetypal forms and shapes, and striving for the highest level of craftsmanship. They address eternal symbols of human culture and history, while embracing contemporary evolution in form and meaning. Catcher of the Skies, glass sculpture by Monica Guggisberg Philip Baldwin
Located in London, GB
'Catcher of the Skies' is a unique pink, orange and black hand-blown and cut glass artwork with steel hull by the American and Swiss artists, Philip Baldwin and Monica Guggisberg. Combining Scandinavian and Venetian glass making techniques, their sculptural boat centerpieces are made from smaller blown and cut glass components nestled (in sand) inside a metallic hull. 'We are migratory creatures; the history of our species is about journeys, departures, leaving and arriving, starting over. And none more so than ourselves. Our new work is both culturally and personally inclined. An autobiographical touch in civilizational reflection. Wherever man goes he builds, laying down cultural lines which gradually transform into relics and artefacts over time's inevitable march. Urban landscapes and complex designs grow and expand, deteriorate and decay. And on again we move, taking the memories of our exploits with us to use in the next story.' B&G Baldwin (1947, New York) and Guggisberg (1955, Bern) have been a collaborative team for over forty years. They share an instinctive appreciation for the subtle blending of art and design, functionality and abstract expression, combined with a love of material – especially glass. 'The Cobalt Voyager' is a unique intense electric blue and black hand-blown and cut glass artwork with steel hull by the American and Swiss artists, Philip Baldwin and Monica Guggisberg. In recent years large installations and major exhibitions in public spaces, such as Canterbury Cathedral...

Bronze "Byte" by noted Artist Jeff Day
By Jeff Day
Located in Palm Springs, CA
An immense and heavy bronze by the noted artist Jeff Day. he is currently in China but we managed to converse with him. He identified the work and the approximate year it was cast and how heard it was to make. He thinks he signed it although we can't find his mark. it is quite impressive and has a beautiful gold flecked patina. There is a fracture in the center small and hard to spot that occurred in the casting. This is a unique piece. There are some minor losses to the patina near the base and minor nicks and scratches. The base has been repaired in one corner. One other corner is missing the wood trim, pictured. The piece and shows its age with age appropriate wear. Shop Unique Furniture on 1stDibs

When it comes to shopping for vintage, new and antique furniture — whether you’re finally moving into that long-coveted loft apartment, ranch-style home, townhouse or furnishing your weekend house on the lake — you should think of your home as a stage for the seating, tables, lighting, storage cabinets and other pieces that best match your personality.

Coziness, comfort and creating a welcoming space are among the important things to consider when buying furniture, whether that means seeking strict cohesion or rooms characterized by a mix-and-match assembly of varying shapes, colors and materials. And for those who now work from home, exercise, eat and relax within the same four walls every day, they’ll also want to think about flexibility and an innovative approach.

Have you built your dream kitchen?

Is your current living-room furniture all that it could be?

Does your toast-worthy bar or vintage bar cart exude equal parts class and cheeriness?

And importantly, is your home officebackyard or otherwise — a happy one, regardless of the design style you happen to gravitate toward?

Although mid-century modern, rustic, minimalist, Art Deco and contemporary looks remain popular, they aren’t the only styles available to design connoisseurs.

Furniture styles are nothing if not fluid, meaning what’s popular one year may not be the next. That’s why it’s crucial to not only pay attention to interior-design trends but also focus on the styles that speak to you. That way, you (and your interior designer, if that is in the plans) can work to create a home that’s entirely your own, complete with impressively modern decor as well as an array of history’s universally renowned iconic designs.

It’s difficult to single out well-recognized designs from what is a crowded pantheon of celebrated and seminal furnishings. Certain outstanding designs have such stellar quality they’ve endured for decades as bona fide cultural treasures, still being manufactured, in many cases, by the same venerable companies that shepherded them into being (think Herman Miller, Knoll and Fritz Hansen). Some works come immediately to mind as contenders for any short list. When you’re discussing the most popular mid-century modern chairs, for example, no tally would be complete without citing designs by Arne Jacobsen, Charlotte Perriand, Charles and Ray Eames and Hans Wegner.

Good furniture, be it authentic vintage furniture or new custom furniture, allows you to comfortably sit and tell your favorite stories. Great furniture tells a story of its own.

On 1stDibs, find everything from sofas to serveware to credenzas to coffee tables, and every other type of antique, vintage and new furniture you need to create a singular space that you’ll be proud to call home.
