Antique Duval Map of East Asia with China, Japan, Korea and the Great Wall, 1663
Located in Langweer, NL
Duval Asia Map 1663 China Japan Korea Great Wall Antique French Cartography This elegant 17th-century map titled “L’Asie” is a finely executed French representation of the Asian continent by Pierre Duval, one of the foremost cartographers of Louis XIV’s France. Published in Paris in 1663, the map reflects a significant stage in European geographic knowledge, presenting Asia with increasing accuracy at a moment when global exploration, trade, and diplomatic contact were rapidly transforming Western understanding of the East. Most of the place names shown represent geographical entities that still exist today or once existed historically, giving the map strong continuity between early modern geography and the modern world. Particularly notable is the improved rendering of Japan and the Korean peninsula, both shown with greater accuracy than in earlier 16th-century maps. The lower islands of Japan are better proportioned, and Korea is clearly depicted as a peninsula rather than an island, marking an important correction in European cartography. China dominates the interior of the continent and is richly detailed with provinces, river systems, and cities. One of the most appealing features is the visible tracing of the Great Wall of China...

Sotheby s Catalog, An Important Russian Imperial Jewel. Geneva, 2005 1st Ed
Located in valatie, NY
Sotheby's Catalog, An Important Russian Imperial Jewel. Geneva 17 November 2005. 1st Ed hardcover. "An impressive and highly important diamond ornament from the collection of the Russian Imperial Family, Russia, second half of the 18th century. This diamond necklace with bowknot clasp is not only a remarkable jewel in itself, but its Russian royal provenance puts it in a class of its own. It evokes the blinding splendour of Catherine II, Empress of Russia: the magnificence of her court, her parks, her palaces, her art collections, and monuments. The most striking and colourful figure on the stage of European political life, for thirty four years she ruled a mighty empire which stretched from Siberia to Poland and left it stronger, larger and richer than when she came to the throne in 1762. After her death in 1796, her friend the Prince de Ligne, who had named her Catherine the Great, declared that this title- which has never been lost- resumed all her genius, courage, sense of justice, and force of character. Using her court as a stage, she played the part of an autocratic but enlightened ruler to perfection, imposing in her public appearances, kind and charming in private. The French ambassador, the Comte de Ségur who noticed how “her majestic head and brow, proud look and dignified deportment made her seem taller than she was”, was also impressed by her feminine grace “ her aquiline nose, well shaped mouth, Saxe blue eyes beneath dark lashes, gentle glance and seductive smile”. In spite of her success, she once confided to the Prince de Ligne that she could have served Russia better if she had been born a man. Ever the courtier, he assured her that being a woman was a positive advantage. “Believe me, you are so much more impressive in your beautiful embroidered orange red velvet dolman or tunic than a man decked out in boots and shoulder sash can ever be. In addition the five huge diamonds blazing out from your hair are far more effective than a man’s hat which is either ridiculously small or ridiculously big”. He was right. Her diamond jewellery proclaimed her power and her rank as Empress and appealed to the Russian taste for sumptuous goods. It impressed the Rev. William Coxe, visiting St. Petersburg in 1778: “the glory and the splendor of the clothing of the court and abundance of precious stones leave the opulence of other European courts far behind” and his opinion was shared by the acute Madame de Stael...

RIGAUD (after) - 19th Drawing signed Portrait of Marie Nemours Orleans - France
By Hyacinthe Rigaud 1
Located in Beuzevillette, FR
Superb, rare and large drawing representing a Portrait of Marie d'Orléans-Longueville, Duchess of Nemours, Princess of France. The drawing is perfectly done. Wonderful work of light on the lace in particular which seems to come out of the painting thanks to its bluish tint. The shadow play is magnificent. On thick marked paper. Drawing Dated 1891 and signed. The Signature is probably “Sieur Duval”. Very good Made from the magnificent painting by Hyacinthe Rigaud (1659-1743), painter of the 18th century model dated 1707. The engraver Pierre Drevet (1663-1738) also engraved this work. The work is “Mary by the grace of God, sovereign of Neufchâtel and Vallangin, duchess of Nemours” / « Marie par la grâce de Dieu, souveraine de Neufchâtel et Vallangin, duchesse de Nemours » Description of the work: Half-legged, seated, turned three-quarters to the left, looking straight on, the princess, whose left arm is folded across her chest, holds her crown placed on the table with her right hand. She is dressed in dark court attire, her head covered with a headdress whose tails are tied on the chest. A curtain and the base of a column constituting the second plan. Marie de Nemours, born in 1625 and died on June 16, 1707, is sovereign princess of Neuchâtel and Valangin. Daughter of Henri II of Orléans-Longueville and Louise de Bourbon-Condé, Mademoiselle de Soissons, she was known until her marriage under the name Marie d'Orléans, Mademoiselle de Longueville. Marie d'Orléans, only daughter of the Duke of Bourbon and Longueville, married Henri II of Savoy, last Duke of Nemours, in 1657. The court was surprised that the richest heiress in France agreed to marry this duke without possessions and without consideration, staid and boring. The Duke of Nemours suddenly fell ill and died on January 2, 1659. The Duchess of Nemours survived him for a long time. In 1694, she was recognized as sovereign of the principality of Neuchâtel and Vallangin (Switzerland), by the states of the country, to the exclusion of the Prince of Conti. She died in Paris on June 16, 1707, at the age of 82. Five months later, despite claims of misconduct by the suitors, the court of these same states awarded this small sovereignty to the King of Prussia. The Duchess of Nemours was said to be miserly and carefully hid her rank under cheap clothes. She was devout but suspicious and often changed her confessor. She left Memoirs, recognized to be remarkable for their accuracy, fidelity and charm of style. Hyacinthe Rigaud, famous painter to King Louis XIV, was born in 1659 and died in 1743. He was the major portraitist of the king and his Court at Versailles. Rigaud fixed for three centuries the image of the official portrait of European courts. On the advice of Le Brun, he devoted himself to portraiture, a genre which he elevated to its highest expression. He attracted the attention of the king and the Court with the portrait of Monsieur...

Shop Unique Furniture on 1stDibs

When it comes to shopping for vintage, new and antique furniture — whether you’re finally moving into that long-coveted loft apartment, ranch-style home, townhouse or furnishing your weekend house on the lake — you should think of your home as a stage for the seating, tables, lighting, storage cabinets and other pieces that best match your personality.

Coziness, comfort and creating a welcoming space are among the important things to consider when buying furniture, whether that means seeking strict cohesion or rooms characterized by a mix-and-match assembly of varying shapes, colors and materials. And for those who now work from home, exercise, eat and relax within the same four walls every day, they’ll also want to think about flexibility and an innovative approach.

Have you built your dream kitchen?

Is your current living-room furniture all that it could be?

Does your toast-worthy bar or vintage bar cart exude equal parts class and cheeriness?

And importantly, is your home officebackyard or otherwise — a happy one, regardless of the design style you happen to gravitate toward?

Although mid-century modern, rustic, minimalist, Art Deco and contemporary looks remain popular, they aren’t the only styles available to design connoisseurs.

Furniture styles are nothing if not fluid, meaning what’s popular one year may not be the next. That’s why it’s crucial to not only pay attention to interior-design trends but also focus on the styles that speak to you. That way, you (and your interior designer, if that is in the plans) can work to create a home that’s entirely your own, complete with impressively modern decor as well as an array of history’s universally renowned iconic designs.

It’s difficult to single out well-recognized designs from what is a crowded pantheon of celebrated and seminal furnishings. Certain outstanding designs have such stellar quality they’ve endured for decades as bona fide cultural treasures, still being manufactured, in many cases, by the same venerable companies that shepherded them into being (think Herman Miller, Knoll and Fritz Hansen). Some works come immediately to mind as contenders for any short list. When you’re discussing the most popular mid-century modern chairs, for example, no tally would be complete without citing designs by Arne Jacobsen, Charlotte Perriand, Charles and Ray Eames and Hans Wegner.

Good furniture, be it authentic vintage furniture or new custom furniture, allows you to comfortably sit and tell your favorite stories. Great furniture tells a story of its own.

On 1stDibs, find everything from sofas to serveware to credenzas to coffee tables, and every other type of antique, vintage and new furniture you need to create a singular space that you’ll be proud to call home.
