About the Item

17th Century Southeast Asian Bronze Tobacco Pipe — Tay Nguyen Plateau, Vietnam A rare 17th-century bronze tobacco pipe unearthed in the Central Highlands of Vietnam, near the Cambodian border on the Tay Nguyen Plateau. Attributed to the Montagnard (Jarai) hill tribes, this piece dates to the 17th century or possibly earlier. The pipe features a bronze bowl with a short, curved stem that once accommodated an elongated reed or bamboo mouthpiece. Its elegant, angular form reflects both indigenous craftsmanship and subtle Chinese design influences. The surface exhibits a rich, natural patina developed over centuries, enhancing its sculptural presence and authenticity. This artifact represents a transitional moment in Southeast Asian material culture — when traditional highland utility met emerging trade influences from neighboring regions. Mounted on a custom steel display base, it reads as both an archaeological relic and a minimalist bronze sculpture. Rare and unique museum quality. Dimensions: 11.75″ W × 1.5″ D × 6.5″ H Origin: Vietnam, Tay Nguyen Plateau Period: 17th Century (possibly earlier) Materials: Bronze Condition: Excellent antique condition consistent with age and excavation. Natural surface wear, patination, and encrustation throughout.
