About the Item

An extraordinary Buddhist temple incense burner from Japan, dating to the late Edo period (18th–19th century). Finely cast in bronze, this ceremonial piece features intricate openwork decorations in the shape of Sanskrit seed syllables (bīja)—sacred characters associated with various Buddhist deities—rendered with remarkable precision and spiritual resonance. The vessel stands on a broad flared pedestal base adorned with stylized lotus petals, symbolizing purity, enlightenment, and spiritual rebirth in Buddhist philosophy. The body is encircled by repoussé lotus motifs, reinforcing its sacred function in ritual contexts. The domed lid is pierced with symmetrical ventilation holes, allowing the scented smoke to rise during ceremonies. It is crowned with a finial in the shape of a lotus bud, raised on a turned column with ringed and fluted details, echoing classical Buddhist architectural forms. Originally used in temples for ritual offerings of incense, this piece combines devotional symbolism with exceptional craftsmanship. A rich natural patina and light surface wear affirm its historic use and add character and authenticity to the object.
