This is an exceptional example of ancient mold-blown glass, likely originating from the Eastern Roman Empire, dating circa 1st–3rd century AD.
The vessel takes the form of a small flask or juglet, traditionally used to hold oils, perfumes, or cosmetics. Its cylindrical body, tall narrow neck, flattened rim, and applied strap handle reflect the elegant simplicity characteristic of mold-blown glassmaking.
Formed from emerald or blue-green soda-lime glass, the color derives naturally from trace iron oxides in the sand used by ancient glassmakers. The surface exhibits striking iridescence and weathering, the result of centuries of burial. These rainbow-like metallic hues—ranging from silvery to gold and violet—are caused by microscopic layers of mineral deposits formed through the slow leaching of the glass surface over time.
