About the Item
We are pleased to present an extremely rare, one-of-a-kind item.
This is a wooden pedestal used in Japanese temples, and is said to have originally been made to support a large bronze vase. It is said that on its top surface, a bronze flower vessel with a circular base matching the diameter of the stand was solemnly "placed." When you think about its background, you get a sense of religious significance that goes beyond a simple wooden product.
It is made from Japanese zelkova, a precious wood. Zelkova is known for its strength, dense wood texture, and beautiful grain, and has been widely used in shrine and temple architecture and religious implements since ancient times. This item also highlights the beauty of its grain, and is further enhanced by a deep, lacquer-like luster, emanating a presence that can only be achieved with aged wood.
It is believed to have been custom-made, and given that it would have been used in only a very limited number of temples, it is extremely rare. Because it is carved from a single piece of zelkova, warping, cracks, and chips may be present due to aging, but these are rather characteristic features that reflect its age. The uneven surface of the top makes it practically impossible to place a vase on it. Therefore, you will need to adjust the height of the top or base of the vase, or simply appreciate it as an object of art.
In my more than 10 years of experience dealing in antiques, this is the first time I have come across something like this, and its rarity and impressiveness are particularly noteworthy. In fact, this piece was purchased about 30 years ago by a long-time antiques dealer in the Kanto region, who carefully displayed it as a non-sale item until I inherited it. It is unlikely that a similar piece will appear on the market again in the future, so please consider this opportunity.
When incorporated into a space, it will have an overwhelming presence as an object that evokes Japanese spirituality. It will harmonize with antique and modern furniture, and will make a powerful addition to a gallery or store.
Please allow 10 days to 2 weeks for packaging and shipping due to the weight and shape of the item.
