An ancient Chinese Han dynasty cocoon jar or oil jar named because of its iconic natural looking elongated cocoon style shape, It is in fine condition with beautiful original remnants of its aged original swirling painted surface. Comes with a custom black wood stand. Dimensions: 11 inches in length and comes with custom-made black wood display stand Handmade and hand-painted A handsome sculpture with an attractive above average quality. History: Our handsome well painted jar would have served as a mortuary object (mingqi), placed in a tomb as a substitute for valuable bronze and lacquer vessels used in daily life. Richly decorated vessels of this kind were intended to serve the spirit of the deceased in the afterlife Its ovoid form imitates the silkworm’s cocoon. The drifting cloud-scroll (yunwen) motif, which flanks a central vertical panel of diamond-shaped lozenges evokes celestial realms of Taoist immortal paradise. The silk industry was an essential and very important industry contributing to China's great wealth accumulation during the Han Dynasty and this iconic cocoon pottery form was seen as a symbol of good luck. This is our last one from our private ancient Chinese collection.
