About the Item
Dated to the early 20th-century, this rustic basket is tightly woven of reeds or bamboo and coated in a putty-like mixture of lacquer and sawdust known as thayo. The thayo coating protects the woven material and provides a watertight seal, lending the small basket a variety of uses. A simple wire handle arches high above the basket, a delicate contrast to the highly textured base.
