A mixture of finely powdered tobacco, herbs, and spices, snuff was introduced to China in the 17th century by Western diplomats. Initially reserved for ranking members of Qing-dynasty society, the practice provided an opportunity to display one's refined aesthetic through collectible snuff containers.
Carved from a single piece of cloudy grey agate, this early 20th century snuff bottle shows off the inherent beauty of its natural materials. The minimal stone form has sheer translucency and subtle striations of light and dark, as though enveloped in misty plumes of smoke. Inclusions of light green color curl around the sides, resembling patches of tree lichen or moss. The bottle is finished with an agate bead stopper and a carved bone snuff spoon.
