About the Item

One of a kind Thousand-Faced Fan with Box, Bamboo and Gouache, Late 19th Century - China Type: Thousand-Faced Fan Materials: Paper, gouache, bone chinoiserie wood Period: 1890s Country: China Good condition considering its age and use Box Dimensions: 7 x 28 x 8 cm Fan Dimensions: 26 x 49 cm An exquisite and unusual Chinese Thousand-Faced Fan with a lacquered box, made in the late 19th century in Canton, the country's main port for export to Europe. The frame is made of finely carved and openwork bamboo sticks. The fan itself is made of paper painted on both sides with vibrant colors and populated with numerous small human figures, hence its name, "thousand-faced." The faces are composed of a thin sheet applied to paper, recreating the characters' features. It unfolds a lavishly detailed courtly scene, depicting a possible ceremonial encounter, palace activities, and ritual episodes typical of the imagery of the Chinese nobility. The intense cobalt blue backgrounds, the ornamental frames, and the fragmented narrative are particularly striking. The fan is preserved with its original black lacquered case or box, decorated with gold motifs on the exterior and floral decorations on the interior, called chinoiseries .The box is decorated inside with exquisite floral paintings on silk. These types of boxes, also produced in Canton, protected the fan during its journey to Europe as part of a luxury set intended for the bourgeoisie of the last third of the 19th century. The Thousand-Faced Fans: Origin and Connection to Spanish Culture The so-called "thousand-faced fans" originated in China at the end of the 18th century and achieved particular popularity in Spain during the 19th century. These fans were characterized by the numerous tiny faces painted or printed on their leaves, depicting a variety of characters, allegorical figures, or intricate scenes with decorative and social value. In Spanish culture, where the fan became a true gestural code and a symbol of femininity, these fans acquired a prominent role: they were fashionable objects, collectibles, and tools for nonverbal communication, integrated into dances, gatherings, and courtly customs. Their frequent presence in portraits and genre scenes made them an essential element of Spanish visual identity during this period. Tray table incorporating Chines Porcelain pattern, British East India Company
By Margaret Fitzhugh Browne
Located in Valladolid, ES
Technical data Materials: Porcelain tray, wooden legs Period: Qing Dynasty Country of origin: China Good condition for its age and use, with some flaws in the wooden structure Overall dimensions: 70 x 95 x 80 cm Porcelain dimensions: 70 x 58 cm Exquisite Fitzhugh pattern porcelain plate or tray, inlaid in a cabinet that highlights its oval profile and raised on four slightly curved square legs. The term "Fitzhugh" refers to a type of Chinese export porcelain produced primarily between 1780 and 1840, featuring blue and white designs. It originated with three members of two generations of the Fitzhugh family. Members of this family held important positions as ship captains and even as directors in the British East India Company. Within this company, high-ranking officials were allowed to engage in private trade. Between 1704 and the 1790s, porcelain pieces bearing this pattern were shipped to England. The design usually includes a central medallion, although it is occasionally replaced by a coat of arms or monogram. The medallion is surrounded by four groupings of flowers representing the four seasons—peony for spring; lotus for summer; chrysanthemum for autumn; and prunus for winter—and symbols that typically represent the four virtues of the Chinese scholar: music, painting, logical thinking, and calligraphy. The design is framed with a decorative border that may be a lattice and spearhead pattern, sometimes known by the term "Nanking," or a more elaborate border featuring butterflies, honeycomb shapes, and floral ornamentation. The definition of the Fitzhugh porcelain...
