About the Item
A delightful and rare Chinese painted high fired gray pottery model of a wooly camel, Northern Wei Dynasty (386 - 535 AD), China, with TL test.
The charming camel is portrayed standing foursquare upon a square plinth, its legs slightly splayed to support the heavy pack set between its slightly drooped humps. The pack features various vessels to one side, while the other side holds a secured pack and foodstuffs, including a rabbit.
The most notable feature of the camel is the treatment of the wooly hair which covers the top of the head in a jaunty poof, and running down the neck and chest before stopping at the knees.
The camel's face bears a wonderful expression on its elegant face, with its long, skinny snout, wide open eyes, and delicate ears that stick straight out.
Crafted of high fired gray pottery, the camel is covered in a tan colored pigment, with red painted highlights to the saddle pack and goods.
Thermoluminescence (TL) tested by Oxford Laboratories.
