About the Item

A mixture of finely powdered tobacco, herbs, and spices, snuff was introduced to China in the 17th century by Western diplomats. Initially reserved for ranking members of Qing-dynasty society, the practice provided an opportunity to display one's refined aesthetic through collectible snuff containers. This charming snuff bottle is hand-carved from dense soapstone with opaque, peachy-pink color, decorated with relief carvings of a pair of koi fish, symbols of harmony, wealth and luck. The bottle is etched with the maker's signature on the back and stoppered with an agate bead and bone snuff spoon. Minor scuffing to surface.
